Satellites solve mystery of low gravity over Canada
If it seems Canadians weigh less than their American neighbours, they do – but not for the reasons you might think. A large swath of Canada actually boasts lower gravity than its surroundings.
At first, researchers suspected it was due to an ice sheet called Laurentide that blanketed a sizeable chunk of North America during the last ice age. In places, the sheet was more than 3 kilometres thick, and it depressed the Earth's crust beneath it.
When the ice age ended about 20,000 years ago, the ice rapidly melted. But the crust has been springing back much more slowly, and it is rebounding today by about 12 millimetres per year.
But in the last decade or so, scientists have begun to suspect that convection in the Earth's mantle, a layer of hot, flowing rock beneath the crust, also plays a role.
The sludge-like mantle rises and falls in plumes as it is heated from below and cooled from above. The mantle can drag the overlying tectonic plates with it as it moves.

Horizontal Wind Turbines
An Arizona State University student has proposed a very novel way of re-capturing some of the energy expended by vehicles moving at high speeds on our nations highways. We all know how much air turbulence is generated by vehicles moving at speed particularly trucks.
The proposal would involve mounting horizontal wind turbines above the roadway that would be driven by the moving air generated by the passing traffic. The electricity generated by spinning these turbines could be fed back into the grid. Joe's analysis indicates that based on vehicle speeds of 70 mph each turbine could produce 9,600 kWh per year.
The wind turbines shown in the proposal are of a quiet running type. Certainly in many built up areas there is enough constant traffic volume to maintain a steady airflow through much of the day. The big question that needs to be answered is whether the nature of the turbulent airflow could keep the turbines turning. If a turbine could be optimized to work in that environment it seems like it might be a very worthwhile investment.
It's certainly deserving of further investigation.

Lithium ion batteries
Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa Corporation are forming a new joint venture company to develop and build large format lithium ion batteries for automotive applications. The Process
1. A human specimen is temporarily preserved to stop decay.
2. The specimen is dissected to feature specific systems and structures.
3. The dissection is immersed in acetone to evacuate all body water.
4. Dehydrated, the specimen is placed in silicone polymer bath and sealed in a vacuum chamber.
5. Under vacuum, acetone leaves the body in gas form and is replaced by silicone polymer to the deepest cellular level.
6. The silicone polymer hardens in curing.
7. The permanently preserved specimen, with its structure intact, is ready for examination and study.

When ants go walking, they count their steps
Perhaps you don’t know, but ants count the number of steps they take to find their way home.
Scientists trained desert ants, Cataglyphis fortis, to walk along a straight path from their nest entrance to a feeder 30 feet away. If the nest or feeder was moved, the ants would break from their straight path after reaching the anticipated spot and search for their goal.
Next, the researchers performed a little cosmetic surgery.
The ants on stilts took the right number of steps, but because of their increased stride length, marched past their goal. Stump-legged ants, meanwhile, fell short of the goal.
After getting used to their new legs, the ants were able to adjust their pedometer and zero in on home more precisely, suggesting that stride length serves as an ant pedometer.

We all know about global warming problems, the excessive fuel utilization will be the reason to cause a potential increase in sea level. KAL Energy Uses Indonesian Infrastructure Advantages to Propel BusinessA 2006 report by AME Mineral Economics states that Indonesia has become the world’s top thermal coal-producing area, taking a distinct lead over former top producers Australia and South Africa. While many in the industry might attribute the change to better mining techniques or higher quality product, the real answer lies within a somewhat surprising realm -- transportation.
“A low cost transportation infrastructure is essential to the economic exporting of coal,” states KAL Energy CEO Cameron Reynolds. “It’s one of the reasons Indonesia has jumped ahead in the market; other areas in the world have simply failed to, or can’t, overcome infrastructure constraints.” KAL Energy’s mineral claims are located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia -- a region of active coal export since the 1980s. According to Reynolds, several infrastructure elements allow the region to maintain world-leading production rates. Among these are rapid rates of scale production, a minimization of front-loaded capital expenditures and diminished unit costs in comparison to competitors. The close proximity of Kal Energy’s mine properties to both the Mahakam and Kadang Pahu Rivers provide for low cost barge transport of coal.
“While other regions around the world are stuck at a certain level of production, places like Kalimantan, in Indonesia, continue to ramp their production massively,” says Reynolds. “It’s definitely a factor that I think investors are starting to realize.” Kal Energy has recently become a public company, trading under the symbol KALG.
KAL Energy has already secured the rights to an estimated geological resource of 192 million tons of thermal coal. This coal has been identified to have a very low sulphur and ash content which allows it to be utilized for more environmentally friendly electricity generation than many other Asian coals. They have made plans to produce and ship 200,000 tons of its product to end users in the latter half of 2007, with additional plans to scale production to 5 million tons per year within the next four years and 15 million tons per year on a long-term basis, after the successful completion of the exploration program and subsequent world class mining feasibility study. The company expects further long-term demand through Coal-to-Liquid (CTL) technologies.
“When you find an advantage, you exploit it in every way possible; and that’s exactly what we plan to do long into the future,” adds Reynolds.

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery. New "sleep machine" - The solution for insomnia

Scientists have invented a technique which they say could help trigger deep sleep in the most chronic insomniac.
Using medical equipment, they stimulated the brain with harmless magnetic pulses.
These penetrate the nerves that control a type of deep sleep called "slow-wave activity" and made their brains produce these waves.
